Background of the Study

Land disputes have long been recognized as a major obstacle to sustainable rural development, particularly in regions where land is a vital resource for agriculture and livelihoods. Obi Local Government Area (LGA) in Nasarawa State, Nigeria, is predominantly rural, with a population that relies heavily on agriculture for their sustenance and economic activities. However, persistent land disputes have significantly hindered the development of this region, affecting the productivity of farms, the equitable distribution of resources, and social stability. These disputes often arise from competing claims to land ownership, disagreements over land use, and encroachments by neighboring communities. In many cases, land disputes lead to violent conflicts that disrupt the community fabric and hinder economic development.

Rural development is intricately linked to access to land, and when land is disputed, the process of development becomes significantly impeded. In Obi LGA, this situation has affected both small-scale farmers and larger agricultural enterprises. The resulting instability also stifles investment in infrastructure, education, and other key sectors necessary for long-term development. Despite the recognition of land disputes as a critical issue, limited research has focused on the specific ways in which these disputes affect rural development in Obi LGA. This study seeks to address this gap by examining the effects of land disputes on the development of rural communities in Obi LGA.

Statement of the Problem

Land disputes have emerged as a key factor hindering the progress of rural development in Obi LGA. The rising frequency of land-related conflicts not only disrupts farming activities but also limits access to essential services such as education and healthcare. The allocation of land for farming or other developmental purposes often becomes contentious, leading to social fragmentation and economic stagnation. In such a context, rural communities in Obi face difficulties in achieving sustained growth and prosperity. This study will investigate how land disputes specifically affect rural development in Obi LGA, focusing on the socio-economic and infrastructural impacts.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the socio-economic effects of land disputes on rural communities in Obi LGA.

  2. To examine the relationship between land disputes and agricultural productivity in Obi LGA.

  3. To explore the role of local authorities and community leaders in resolving land disputes in Obi LGA.

Research Questions

  1. How do land disputes affect the socio-economic development of rural communities in Obi LGA?

  2. What is the impact of land disputes on agricultural productivity in Obi LGA?

  3. What role do local authorities and community leaders play in resolving land disputes in Obi LGA?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Land disputes have a significant negative impact on the socio-economic development of rural communities in Obi LGA.

  2. Land disputes reduce agricultural productivity and impede economic growth in Obi LGA.

  3. Local authorities and community leaders play a crucial role in mitigating land disputes in Obi LGA.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on Obi LGA in Nasarawa State, examining the relationship between land disputes and rural development from 2010 to 2025. Limitations may include difficulties in accessing community leaders or respondents involved in ongoing land disputes, as well as challenges in generalizing findings from this specific area to other rural regions.
